Jesus had a job for his disciples to do. They were to preach to all the world, starting at Jerusalem (Luke 24:45-49). Their message was to be one of hope -- Jesus had died and was alive again, if people repented he could forgive their sins.

After giving these instructions Jesus led his disciples to a place near Bethany, a village on the Mount of Olives (Luke 24:50) Read how he left them in Acts 1:1-11.

The promise in verse 11 is an important one. Jesus was now immortal, but he was not yet King ruling over the land of Israel. Jesus has to come back again for that to happen.
