In the beginning God created Adam and Eve, then placed them in a beautiful garden. He gave them one law: Do not eat the fruit of a particular tree. But the woman Eve listened (Genesis 3:1-6) to the reasoning of the serpent and ate the forbidden fruit, then convinced Adam to eat also. This was the first sin. When God questioned their actions, Adam blamed his wife Eve, and Eve in turn blamed the serpent, but the serpent could blame nobody.

To this day people still try to blame others for their sins! The Bible informs us in James,

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

James 1:13-14, NIV

As a result of their sin; Adam, Eve, and the serpent were punished. The serpents punishment was that there would always be hatred between it (snakes) and humans:

So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all the livestock
and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.

Genesis 3:14, NIV

The mans punishment was that he had to work for his daily food:

To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, `You must not eat of it,’
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat of it
all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 3:17-19, NIV

The womans punishment was that she would be in subjection to her husband and that he would rule over her. Also that giving birth would be a painful experience.

To the woman he said,
“I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”

Genesis 3:16, NIV

And both were condemned to death. As are all their descendants down to our very day:

... As sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned...

Romans 5:12, RSV

So we should be aware of our actions. The Bible gives us advice and choices. God has a future for us, but only if we make the right choices.
