This is very important because it is our first introduction to God.
It gives us information about God and his relationship to the whole world
that will be the basis for the whole of the rest of the Bible.
Read Genesis 1.
Did you notice the first few words "In the Beginning God..."? We think of
everything as having a beginning, yet we are told in other parts of the
Bible that God always existed. (Psalm 90:2)
Note
the order of creation. Each new day's creation relied on what had
already been made for survival. Naturalists and Scientists today are
still discovering the amazing detail and harmony in God's creation and how
humans have destroyed the delicate balance that existed.
In verse 26 God was not alone. We go to Job 38:4-7 to find out that
angels were there with him. Angels are beings that act as messengers for God.
God made man in his own image and likeness (verse 26) and both male
and female were made in this way (verse 27). This tells us that his 'image
and likeness' are more than just physical form, it includes characteristics
as well. This is confirmed by Ephesians 4:22-24, Colossians 3:9-10.
Verses 29 and 30 show that all animals (including us) were originally
vegetarian. This is difficult to imagine, especially when we think of
animals like the lion. It was not until later that God gave them meat
to eat.
